On 17 September, Japan’s National Diet will elect the country’s first new prime minister for nearly eight years, with Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga by far the most likely candidate to replace Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

On 18 September, GR Japan will hold a special online seminar to discuss prospects for the new prime minister’s domestic and foreign policies, as well as the implications for Japan-US relations.

Jakob Edberg, GR Japan’s CEO & President, formerly Policy Director for the European Business Council in Japan, now Japan’s leading government relations practitioner, will look at the new administration’s domestic policies.

Ambassador Koji Tsuruoka, Senior Adviser to GR Japan, Japan’s former Ambassador to the UK from 2016-19, and Japan’s Chief Negotiator for the Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations as Senior Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, will draw on his 43 years of experience at Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to examine the new administration’s foreign policy priorities.

And Jim Fatheree, Executive Director at GR Japan’s Washington D.C. office, will speak on the implications of the new administration for the Japan-US relationship, leveraging his experience as former President of the US-Japan Business Council, Vice President for Asia at the US Chamber of Commerce, and co-leader of the US Coalition for the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement.

We look forward to welcoming you on 18 September for an insightful discussion of Japan’s new challenges and opportunities.
