Shigeru Ishiba to Succeed Kishida as Prime Minister

On 27 September, Shigeru Ishiba was elected as the new president of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), succeeding Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Ishiba is set to be nominated as prime minister on 1 October, leading to the formation of a new cabinet. Despite being a long-standing candidate, Ishiba finally secured the presidency and premiership on his fifth attempt.

Ishiba’s victory came after a runoff election, reflecting his broad appeal among local party members and veteran lawmakers. His agenda includes continuing Kishida's economic policies, creating a "Ministry of Disaster Prevention," and promoting regional development. Ishiba also proposes revising the US-Japan Status of Forces Agreement and forming an Asian version of NATO.
