GR Japan IPF Election Special "Outlook for the House of Representatives election" on 24 October

National Diet Building

GR Japan's next International Policy Forum (IPF) will delve into the upcoming general election, scheduled for 27 October, against the backdrop of Japan's rapidly evolving political landscape.  After the surprising outcome of the LDP Presidential election and the sudden - though not entirely surprising - dissolution of the House of Representatives, the election campaign is in full swing.

Newly elected Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba is facing an immediate trial of his leadership. Just weeks into his term, he must navigate complex dynamics within his party, public dissatisfaction over his party’s handling of the political funding scandal, and a reinvigorated opposition. The Constitutional Democratic Party (CDP), led by former Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, is pushing for a change in government, while Ishin seeks to expand its influence beyond Kansai and become a national player.

The complexities of Japan's electoral system make it unclear how many candidates the opposition has a real chance of winning. This uncertainty raises key questions ahead of this election:

  • Can the opposition field enough viable candidates in key districts to seriously challenge the LDP-Komeito coalition?
  • How will the last-minute exclusion of members involved in the political funding scandal from the proportional list impact the election?
  • What will the distribution of seats look like after the vote and which electoral seats will determine the outcome?
  • Will Prime Minister Ishiba manage to hold onto power, and how will the election result shape future policy?

Jakob Edberg, GR Japan President & CEO, will provide in-depth analysis of these pressing questions just days before the vote.
