International Policy Forum with Yoshihiro Seki

Member of the House of Representatives, Former State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry and State Minister of the Environment

Japan has enacted an economic security law to address the deteriorating security environment in East Asia, the COVID pandemic, and the growing threat from China, which have emphasized the need for greater economic security and supply chain resilience. The recent chip shortage has shown the vulnerability of developed economies to disruptions in the global semiconductor supply chain, which has raised concerns for Japan and its G7 partners. To address this, Japan needs to bring critical industry capacities onshore and rebuild its semiconductor industry, which was once dominant until the 1980s.

Mr. Seki, a former Vice-Minister of METI and an influential representative of the LDP's largest faction, was ahead of his time identifying this problem and initiating a parliamentary league dedicated to the semiconductor industry. He has proposed investing 10 trillion yen over the next ten years to strengthen the domestic semiconductor industry. As a respected expert and influential politician, Mr. Seki's briefing offers insights on how to secure the future of the semiconductor industry in order to enhance economic security and the competitiveness of the Japanese economy.

We hope that you will join us for our event, where you will have the opportunity to hear Mr. Seki's update and participate in a hopefully lively exchange of views oneconomic security, Japan’s economic and environment policies, government and the semiconductor industry.

We look forward to seeing you at the event.
