GR Japan's June Industry Insight highlights the evolving landscape of Japan's transportation industry. After a rather long wait, ridesharing has finally started in Japan but not in the form one would have expected. It’s not a surprise that even Japanese officials refer to it as “Japan-style ridesharing”. Japan had to move under the increasing pressure created from a shortage of drivers the sudden and huge increase in demand due to the rebound in tourism and due to inadequate mobility services in the countryside. However, apart from the taxi industry no one can really be satisfied with what has eventually been created.
